PE Curriculum

The PE Curriculum provides pupils with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to become physically literate, whilst developing the pupils socially through leadership and teamwork skills. Through a broad and balanced range of sports and activities, we aim to enthuse and inspire pupils to participate fully and develop a life-long love of physical activity, sport and exercise.

Year 7 PE looks to introduce the fundamental skills required, whilst enabling students to have a general understanding of a variety of sports.

The KS3 curriculum looks to revisit the fundamental skills, whilst building knowledge around the rules of the games, and developing confidence through gameplay.

The KS4 curriculum looks to recap skills and rules, whilst developing an understanding of tactics and using their broad skill sets to develop strategies.

Students are exposed to invasion games, body management, racquet sports, athletics and striking and fielding activities.

The PE curriculum is enriched further in Year 7 and KS3 through the Personal Challenge lessons. These lessons provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

The Personal Challenge programme develops social interaction and positive communication skills through participation in problem solving and team building challenges. We also aim to develop pupils' resilience and determination by exposing them to a broad range of challenging activities.

Supporting Reading

Subject disciplinary literacy is taught explicitly in PE with key words identified and introduced at the start of topics and revisited regularly to aid retention. Specific keywords are written on a whiteboard as well as verbalised to give focus in each lesson. Repetition of new and key vocabulary is used to support learning and to give students context to use these words. Practical examples and demonstrations are used to help consolidate the learning of this vocabulary.

In PE, the ‘incidental teaching’ of phonics using Abbey Phonics supports both decoding and encoding when looking at Key Words. Scripts are used to give a consistent approach across the school.

Context and practical examples are given on the majority of occasions to bring ideas to life, to give context to learning and to support retention.

Assessment

Students are assessed across the half term against the APS.

Every half term students are assessed internally, which allows staff to ensure they are being stretched and challenged within their PE group.

In KS4, these assessment grades may contribute towards the Entry Level PE qualification

Enrichment opportunities

The following events take place yearly:

  • Sports fixtures (inter and intra school)
  • House events (within PE and whole school events)
  • Sports Day
  • Lunchtime clubs
  • Leadership opportunities
