Charity Special Feature

Few things in life are as important as learning to give with joy and enthusiasm, and learning to receive with grace and thanks. A busy November saw The Abbey Community working together to donate funds to important causes, and also being the grateful beneficiary of others hard work and support.

Practical Support

The charitable trust of The Worshipful Company of Turners has supported the purchase of a woodworking lathe for use in Practical Studies and other vocational lessons at the school. The students will receive one-to-one tuition from their instructors, Mr Truscott and Mr Packham who have had special training. Learning to use the lathe will give our students valuable life-skills and help enhance their future career prospects.
On Tuesday 26th November the company’s Master, Mr Rhidian Jones, accompanied by his wife Monica, visited the school to make the official presentation together with Stuart Mortimer, award winning internationally known woodturner, and Colin Field, past master and chairman of the Company's Charity Committee which has made this gift to the school. Auriel Rankmore, Vice Chair of Governors at the school, joined staff and students to receive the gift and say thank you.
The presentation party was joined by Matthew Corbishley, a young craftsman based in Farnham who specialises in bespoke cabinet making and woodturning, has benefitted from a Worshipful Company of Turners bursary and recently won the Cockpit Arts and Worshipful Company of Turners Award. Matthew has his own company called iwoodcreate and brought some examples of his work to inspire the students. It is hoped that Matthew will continue to offer advice and support to tutors and students on an on-going basis.

Children in Need

Form 3C had a Children in Need cake sale and nearly all of the cakes were sold by the end of break! We are proud to say that we have raised £41.14 from the cake sale for Children in Need. The money was counted by Cameron Thorn and checked by Mrs Thomas and Leo Long.

Form 4Y had a cake sale for the Philippines Typhoon Disaster Appeal and raised £62 for Samaritans Purse to help people suffering as a result of the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in November.

Thank you to all the parents, carers and staff who kindly baked and donated cakes to both the fund raising days.

Algarve Coastal Ride for The Abbey

Mr Davies (father of Alina, Year 8) successfully completed the challenging 150-mile weekend cycle ride. He is kindly raising funds for the school and has already collected £110.

Haselemere Festival

Mr Gardiner gratefully received a cheque for £1,000 from Mr Seldon (father of Carl in Year 7) to benefit students at The Abbey.
The money was raised via the Taste of Haslemere Festival.

Waitrose Green Tokens

Thanks to Waitrose who donated £210 through the Green Token Community Scheme in the Farnham branch.
