A Very Special School
The Abbey School is a strong and vibrant special school with places for 100 children aged 11-16 years who have learning difficulties and communication disorders. Around one in five students have autistic spectrum disorders.
Based in Farnham, the school is one of only 7 Surrey County Council Moderate Learning Difficulty Special Schools and draws pupils from Sussex and Hampshire as well as Surrey.
An ambitious £1.4 million new build project was completed in summer 2007, funded by central government, and in 2003 the school’s governing body agreed to the refurbishment of the existing buildings. Now, in the spring of 2009 much of that refurbishment is complete and school is somewhere the students, staff and local community really can have pride in.
The Abbey has a string of national accolades and accreditations directly supporting teaching and learning, including becoming the first Surrey special school (and only the fourth school in the county, overall) to receive the ICT Mark award for excellence in ICT provision and application. In January 2009 the school were also awarded with full Investor in Careers Status. Currently The Abbey is the only special school in Surrey to achieve this high level national award. The school has also achieved 'Active Mark' for Sports, Investors in People status, and the Healthy Schools Award. We are proud to be recognised through theses awards for the very high standards of education we provide for our students.
At the heartbeat of The Abbey is the welfare of our students, our staff, and our whole school community. The Abbey is about belonging, laughing, learning and valuing life and friendships. It is about maximising progress and developing the confidence to look forward to all our futures. The Abbey truly is a ‘can do’ school.
