Geography Curriculum

Geography is a linking subject with the sciences, humanities and the arts. Our Geography lessons’ intention is to help each student develop contextual knowledge of their location both locally and globally. Students develop a knowledge of globally significant places including their physical and human characteristics and how these provide a context for understanding the actions of processes. Students gain an  understanding of the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world with new insights and from different perspectives. As students progress along the Geography pathway they become competent  in the geographical skills including ICT needed to:

  • collect, investigate and communicate using a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork

  • understand a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs

  • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and measurable skills and writing.

Supporting Reading

Subject disciplinary literacy is taught explicitly in Geography with key words identified and introduced at the start of topics and revisited regularly via a variety of media to aid retention such as images, maps, graphs and diagrams.

Specific key words are highlighted in green to give focus in each lesson.Supporting images and examples are all used to introduce key vocabulary. Repetition of new and key vocabulary is used to support learning and to give students context to use these words.

In Geography, the ‘incidental teaching’ of phonics using Abbey Phonics supports both decoding and encoding. Scripts are used to give a consistent approach across the school.

Where possible, stories are used to bring ideas to life, to give context to learning and to support retention.

Widgit symbols are used in addition to text to support comprehension for students when reading.

In Geography, we provide regular opportunities for students to read and focus specifically on finding the key points. We encourage students to read for learning, moving beyond the mechanics of reading to gathering meaning and information from the text. We also give recommendations of reading materials to encourage reading beyond the classroom.

Students have access to headsets & Chromebooks where they can use the dictation feature or use the Select to Speak tool, reading selected text to the user.

Assessment

A variety of different types of assessments are used. The overarching aim of these assessments is to ensure that our students  know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes underpinning Geography. An accredited entry level qualification is offered in KS4.

Enrichment Opportunities

Geography is brought to life with real world scenarios. All lessons are linked back to where this topic or skill is needed in the real world.

Field trips around the local area including mapwork skills are included in our curriculum design.
