Preparing for Post 16

Preparing for a successful transition beyond The Abbey is a process that starts in Year 9. This allows you as parents/carers and students enough time to research and visit the various post 16 options so that the right provision is in place for your child when they leave The Abbey.

There are various post 16 options but most of our students go on to supported learning courses at college, some to a specialist 6th form - or there might be an opportunity for some students to start an apprenticeship or training.

It is essential that parents/carers become proactive from Year 9 onwards as it is you who will make the final decisions and submit applications. The role of the school is to support you throughout the transition process. Please contact our Careers Leader, Tess Van Woerkom, if you have any queries or require guidance at any stage. We also recommend keeping in contact with your child’s Case Officer.

Young people must stay in education or training until they are 19. Students with an EHCP can continue to get free education and training up to the age of 25. However there is no legal right to continued education post 19, and students needs to show excellent attendance and progress for the EHCP to continue.

Our transition booklet Preparing for Post 16: A Guide to Life after The Abbey will hopefully be a useful guide. A copy will be given to all parents when their student starts Year 9 and can be viewed, along with other useful information, below.
